Terms of participation.

Please read this carefully. By submitting a request, becoming a member, or donating to the fund, you agree to these terms.

Effective May 2026 · canopygives.org

In plain language: Canopy connects people who need help with people who want to give it — anonymously, voluntarily, and without guarantees. We are not a licensed contractor, a delivery service, a financial institution, or a charity. We are a private society of people trying to do good things for each other. Participation is voluntary. Outcomes are never guaranteed. We do our best, and we ask everyone involved to do theirs.

Section 1

What Canopy is — and isn't.

Canopy ("we," "us," "the society") is a private, invitation-only society of individuals who perform voluntary good deeds for others. Canopy is not a licensed contractor, home repair service, delivery company, financial services provider, or registered nonprofit organization.

Canopy facilitates connections between people who submit requests and members who choose to respond. We do not employ the individuals who perform deeds. Members act voluntarily, in good faith, and on their own initiative. Canopy exercises no control over how, when, or whether a deed is completed once claimed.

Canopy is not a party to any transaction between a member and a recipient. We are the facilitating society, not the service provider.

Section 2

Submitting a request.

By submitting a request through canopygives.org, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

No guarantee of fulfillment

Submitting a request does not guarantee that a deed will be performed. Canopy makes no promise of response time, outcome, or completion. Requests are reviewed and fulfilled at the discretion of our members and the availability of the fund.

Accuracy of information

You represent that the information you provide in your request is truthful and accurate to the best of your knowledge. Knowingly submitting false or misleading information may result in your request being declined and future requests being disqualified.

Risk of physical access

If your request involves a member entering your home or property, you consent to that access voluntarily and acknowledge that Canopy members are not licensed professionals. Any repair, task, or service performed is done voluntarily and in good faith. Canopy is not liable for any damage, injury, or loss arising from a member's presence on your property.

Delivery and non-receipt

If your deed involves delivery of goods, Canopy is not responsible for theft, spoilage, misdelivery, or any other failure after the delivery has been made. If goods are stolen or do not reach you, you are welcome to submit a new request.

No cash payments

Canopy never sends cash or direct transfers to recipients. All fund disbursements are made directly to vendors on your behalf. You agree not to request cash payments from members or the fund.

Voluntary acceptance

Accepting a deed from Canopy is entirely voluntary. You are under no obligation to participate, and participation creates no ongoing relationship or entitlement to future assistance.

Important: If a Canopy member behaves inappropriately, makes you feel unsafe, or acts in a manner inconsistent with what was described in your deed, please contact us immediately at hello@canopygives.org. The safety and dignity of every recipient is non-negotiable.

Section 3

Becoming and being a member.

By applying for and accepting membership in Canopy, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

Voluntary participation

All deeds are performed voluntarily. You are never required to claim a deed, and you may release any claimed deed back to the queue at any time within the 72-hour window. Membership creates no obligation to perform any specific number of deeds.

Acting in good faith

You agree to perform all deeds honestly, carefully, and with genuine care for the recipient. You will not misrepresent your skills, qualifications, or intentions when claiming a deed.

No professional licensure representation

Unless you are a licensed professional in the relevant field, you will not represent yourself as such. If a deed requires licensed work — electrical, plumbing, structural — you will disclose this to Canopy before proceeding so appropriate arrangements can be made.

Personal liability for your actions

You are personally responsible for your conduct during any deed. Canopy does not indemnify members against claims arising from their own negligence, misconduct, or failure to act with reasonable care.

Property and safety

You will treat recipients' homes, property, and belongings with care and respect. You will not enter any space you were not explicitly invited into. If a situation feels unsafe, you will remove yourself and notify Canopy immediately.

Anonymity and confidentiality

You will never reveal your identity as the person who performed a deed. You will never share identifying information about recipients — their name, address, or the nature of their request — with anyone outside of Canopy's operational review process.

Fund use

Members do not have direct access to the Canopy fund. All payments for deed fulfillment are coordinated and paid by Canopy directly to vendors — members are never expected to front personal money for a deed, and should never accept payment of any kind from a recipient. If a deed requires a purchase or service, Canopy will arrange it. Attempting to solicit or accept funds from recipients or donors is grounds for immediate removal from the society.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Canopy and its operators from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses arising from your conduct during a deed, including but not limited to property damage, personal injury, or breach of these terms.

Good Samaritan protection: Many US states, including Louisiana, have Good Samaritan laws that provide legal protection for individuals who voluntarily provide assistance to others in good faith. While these laws vary by state and circumstance, members acting in genuine good faith within the scope of a Canopy deed may have protections under applicable law. We encourage members to familiarize themselves with the Good Samaritan laws in their state.

Section 4

Donating to the fund.

By donating to the Canopy fund, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

Not tax-deductible

Canopy is not a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations to the Canopy fund are not tax-deductible under US federal or state law. You should not claim these donations as charitable deductions without consulting a qualified tax advisor.

Non-refundable

All donations are final and non-refundable. Once a contribution is added to the Canopy fund it may be allocated to an active deed at any time.

No directed giving

Donations are added to the general fund and allocated at the discretion of Canopy's operational review. You may not direct your donation to a specific recipient, deed, or member.

Fund use

The fund is used for deed fulfillment, platform operations, and a reserve for urgent requests. A full breakdown is published in our monthly transparency report at canopygives.org/transparency.

Cancellation of recurring gifts

Monthly donations may be cancelled at any time by contacting hello@canopygives.org. Cancellations take effect at the next billing cycle.

Section 5

Limitation of liability.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Canopy and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from:

  • The performance or non-performance of any deed by any member
  • Property damage, personal injury, or loss occurring during or after a deed
  • Theft, spoilage, or non-receipt of delivered goods
  • Failure of a fund payment to reach a vendor in time to prevent a service interruption
  • The conduct of any member during a deed, including but not limited to negligence or misconduct
  • Any reliance on information provided through canopygives.org
  • Any interruption or discontinuation of Canopy's operations

In no event shall Canopy's total liability to any party exceed the amount, if any, that Canopy has actually received from or on behalf of that party in the thirty days preceding the claim.

Note: Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability. In such jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the greatest extent permitted by law.

Section 6

Privacy and anonymity.

Canopy takes privacy seriously. The society is built on anonymity — for members and recipients alike.

Recipient information

Never published, shared, or retained beyond what is necessary to fulfill a deed. Once a deed is complete, identifying information is discarded.

Member information

Held in confidence within the society's operational team and never shared publicly or with third parties except as required by law.

Donor information

Used solely to process contributions and send receipts and impact communications. Never sold or shared with third parties.

Request content

Read by a small, trusted group of people within Canopy for the purpose of matching requests with appropriate deeds. Never published verbatim without explicit consent.

Section 7

Governing law and disputes.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Louisiana, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any dispute arising from these terms or your participation in Canopy shall be resolved first through good-faith communication with us at hello@canopygives.org.

By participating in Canopy, you waive the right to participate in any class action lawsuit or class-wide arbitration against Canopy or its operators.

Section 8

Changes to these terms.

Canopy may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date above and notify active members by email. Continued participation after a change constitutes acceptance of the new terms.

If you have questions about these terms, reach out at hello@canopygives.org. We'll respond personally.
